Hey Erin/skatehead/nono,

I started playing with Box2dFlash today and it's great! I hadn't realized a port of Box2d was in development! Thanks skatehead, and thanks Erin, Box2d is fantastic! And nono! As for you; I'm interested in your cleanup project! I was actually browsing through the source thinking where I should start. I was going to place the project into package format and thought about changing a few finer details as well, but it sounds as though you're a few steps ahead! I can tell you that there's definitly an interest in the project. I'm sure hundreds of Flash developers will be practically drooling over the straight Box2d port, but a version simplied for the flash crowd would be a wonderful thing indeed.

Ben.

Hi guys

is there any step-by-step tutorial for Box2DFlash?
Or I should check the examples?

@nono: I'm aware that it doesn't work with Flex (Due to strictness), but that has been fixed now and will be updated in the 1.4.3 release. I'd be happy to take a look at your changes, you're welcome to post them here, what do you mean 'better packages' though?, I've kept it as similar as I could to the original Box2D to make doing updates as easy as possible.
Thanks for that link, sounds like it might be better than SEPY which I'm currently using.

@NintendoBen: Thanks, for now I'm keeping the port as similar to the original Box2D as possible, but simplifying the API interface/making it more flash user friendly is something I'm considering, let me know if you have any specific suggestions.

@glezmen: You'll have to check the examples for now, there isn't any tutorials yet. I'm thinking of including a well commented 'hello-world' type example in the next release to help get users started.

skatehead,

About when is 1.4.3 due?
I, too, have made changes so I could use it in Flex and for further optimization. Please contact me if you'd like a hand optimizing and maintaining this. I, too, would be very happy to help... in an organized way.

Here's my flexed and further optimized version:

Hi@all,

A step by step tutorial for beginners would not be amiss!

Thanks

you can use the box2d tutorial (that is written for C++), it can be applied to box2dflash with minimal changes (no reference parameters, etc.)

I've been looking for a well built 2d physics engine for a while, seems like I've struck gold here. It may have been stated already somewhere but I would suggest a tutorial showing how to attach movieClips from the library to the objects. I know my ultimate goal would be to have some clean artwork attached to the boxes and polys, and use those as a base for the collision for my artwork.

I'm not a flash newb by any means, nor am I a master.

Will there be an AS3 forum in the future?

I would also like to contribute to the project, if there's not already too many cooks in the kitchen. I've started using the engine for a few of my personal projects, and so far I'm pretty impressed by how easy it is to use.

Hi all, I was wondering - will the AS3 port work with a command line compiler, or will it actually need an IDE? A straight compile didn't seem to do it, but I'm not an expert so I might not be doing it right. For whatever reason I can't get SEPY working on my Mac, either (some stupid Python error...arrgh!).

What do you guys see as the path of least resistance to getting this running, short of shelling out some outrageous sum of money for the official IDE?

BTW, on the matter of API simplifications, we've been considering this as well for the Java port. Personally, I think the best solution is not to alter the internals, but to add a utility layer to perform whatever simplifications would be specifically useful for the environment you're in. I don't have the time at the moment to devote much energy to this type of thing, but I'm curious to see what you guys come up with.
